How to Care for a Kitten in a New Home: Tips for Owners
Moving into a new home is a big milestone in a kitten’s life. To make the adaptation smooth, it’s important to create a cozy and safe environment from day one.
Here are a few practical tips to help your kitten settle in and grow into a healthy, happy cat.
Prepare Your Home for the Kitten's Arrival
Before the little one arrives, get:
○ bowls for food and water,
○ a litter tray and filler,
○ food (preferably the same one it’s used to),
○ a scratching post and toys,
○ a bed or a soft cushion.
Also, make sure your houseplants are safe for cats — for example, eating euphorbia leaves can poison a kitten.
Feeding: Routine & Quality
Kittens up to 6 months should be fed 4 times a day. Use high-quality kitten food appropriate for its age.
In the first month at its new home, it should eat the same food as in the cattery.
If you're switching food — do it gradually! Always consult a vet or call the breeder to ask about food changes.
Litter Training
Place the litter box in a quiet spot. After meals or naps — put the kitten in the box and let it walk out on its own. Do this a few times a day. Praise it when it uses the box correctly. Don’t yell — that only creates stress.
And don’t be shy to ask the breeder for a bit of used litter — familiar smells help the kitten feel at ease and know where to go.
Socialization & Play
Spend time with your kitten, but don’t force it — let it warm up to you. Playtime is vital for development: choose safe toys to avoid injuries.
Vet Visit
Within the first week after moving in, visit the vet just to get acquainted.
Get advice on care and preventive treatments going forward.
Patience & Love
Be patient — every kitten adapts in its own way.
Create a safe environment, and in just a few days, your fluffy baby will feel like part of the family.
